Cinnamon ornaments

As obsessed as I am with mid century EVERYTHING, when it comes to my Christmas tree, I’m all all about the woodsy/rustic look. We used to buy a real tree every year, and then one year the dog decided he needed to ” use the bathroom”! Couldn’t really yell at him, he was trained to go outside on trees after all… So after much hunting we found the perfect fake tree. The problem was the lack of smell.
I love homemade and decided that buying “smelly sticks” just wasn’t going to cut it. After much online hunting, and trial and error, I happily present AMAZING smelling cinnamon ornaments to hang on your tree!

Cinnamon Ornaments:

Ingredients:

* 1 cup applesauce
* 2 cup ground cinnamon
* 1 tablespoon ground cloves (optional)
* medium to large mixing bowl
* rubber spatula
* cookie cutters in desired shape(s)
* skewer or straw
* Paint,glitter,jewels,etc (optional)

Instructions:

* Preheat oven to 200 degrees F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
* In a large bowl, combine ingredients.
* Using spatula, slowly begin mixing together. I can’t emphasis the slowly part enough!! Otherwise you end up with a cinnamon shower…

* You want the dough to form a ball without being too sticky. Add additional applesauce or cinnamon if needed.
* Place about 1/4 of the dough between two pieces of wax paper to roll. Make sure you sprinkle the paper top and bottom with cinnamon before placing “dough” and rolling! Use a rolling pin to roll the dough to 1/4 inch thick.
* Cut out into desired shapes and place on the prepared sheet pan so that they aren’t touching.
* Use a skewer or straw to poke a hole into top of each ornament (to attach string after baking).
* Bake in the preheated oven for 1 1/2 – 2 hours or until dry and hard. *remember slow and steady wins the race here*
* Once cooled, tie a pretty string through hole, hang up and enjoy! Keeping with the rustic theme, I just tore some fabric into strips and let them fray.
* You can also decorate to your hearts content, glitter, paint, jewels. The sky’s the limit!
* Store in a cool dry place, attic not recommend, and they will hold their scent for years.

**You can air dry, however it will take quite a few days. Handle with care, they are not super delicate but can break. DO NOT EAT.**
